Sweet potatoes are not only a symbol of Taiwan but also the staple food for its residents. The shape of Taiwan's map resembles a sweet potato, and its people are often referred to as "sweet potato kids" because sweet potatoes need roots to thrive. Traditional agriculture and rural life are the roots of Taiwan. For a long time in history, Taiwan relied on agriculture and rural areas to establish its foundation. Agriculture grew and developed within rural communities, and the lives of rural residents revolved around agricultural work. Agriculture and rural life were inseparable and provided the fundamental support for the survival and growth of the Taiwanese people on this island.
Since Taiwan's industrialization and urbanization, the economy has grown, but society has become superficial. Traditional agriculture and rural life have gradually declined, and the symbolic roots of Taiwan have been shrinking. However, the people of Taiwan cannot forget their roots. It is necessary to rediscover and appreciate our roots, to carefully reflect on them, and to regain the spirit of hard work, perseverance, and the natural kindness and simplicity.
With a heart that loves and cherishes Taiwan, I have sought and cherished our roots. In this book, I recount the lost moments of traditional agricultural work and rural life, inviting everyone to reminisce together and inspire each other. Let us rebuild the true nature of the "sweet potato children" and make our society more solid and everlasting.

作者簡介

The author of this book is Hong-Chin Tsai (1938-), who is a Professor Emeritus of National Taiwan University. Professor Tsai achieved his Ph.D. of Sociology from Brown University.  He has published hundreds of Chinese/English articles and essays, as well as over fifty books.
